Podcasts for your health

Last week I shared a list of storytelling podcasts and promised to post health related podcasts this week.

My goal for choosing health related podcasts is to stick with accredited people. I do not want to end up fascinated by a trendy influencer who has no idea what they are talking about let alone legitimate research to back up their claims - there is enough bad advice out there without someone trying to promote their product, supplement or clothing line. So I stick to doctors, researchers, Ph.D.’s and one super athlete because he has really interesting people on his podcast.

Intrigued? Read on!

  1. Andrew Huberman, Ph.D.: A neuroscientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His podcasts can be a little dry (very technical) but wow are they interesting. Sometimes I have to listen to the same podcast twice to understand everything. He explains things from a scientific standpoint so you understand the biology of the processes.

  2. Rangan Chatterjee, M.D.: This doctor from the UK is really into simplifying health and wellbeing. One of the best pieces of insight I read in his book, Feel Better in Five is that if someone told you to spend five minutes a day, several times a day eating “junk food” you would never want to participate thinking it would result in weight gain, moodiness and overall malaise. However if someone told you to spend five minutes a day, several times a day doing mindful, healthy things for yourself (push ups, planks, meditating) that you would think those few minutes to be a waste of time. When in reality, over time you would start to feel better and improve your health. His podcast is called Feel Better, Live More.

  3. RIch Roll: This is the only one on my list who isn’t a doctor, researcher or Ph.D. From his website - Rich Roll is a 50+ year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate. He interviews anyone who engages with brain health, mental wellbeing, plant-based nutrition and athletes. And as a former addict, he has an interesting perspective about addictions, which I have found insightful.

  4. Michael Greger, M.D.: The founder of NutritionFacts.org, and author of several books, Dr. Greger cites all of his findings with scientific, peer-reviewed studies. If you have a question specific to health or nutrition, he is the person to turn to. He follows a plant-based diet and has created an app for people who want to get started adopting or supplementing more plants in their diet.

  5. I don’t have a fifth podcast! There are some new podcasts that I haven’t had a chance to listen to just yet, they include Matthew Walker, Ph.D., Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at UC Berkeley and David Sinclair, Ph.D., a professor of genetics and co-director of Harvard Medical School's Center for Biology of Aging Research.

Who else should be on this list? Obviously there are women doing this kind of research - tell me who they are so I can include them on another list! I would love to hear your suggestions.

I hope you will find at least one of the aforementioned podcasts helpful, interesting or beneficial. And what does this have to do with Health Coaching? Maybe you will decide after listening to one of these podcasts that you are ready to start your journey to better health! I can assist you in tailoring a plan based on your goals and vision of your health. Contact me today for more information.
